Throwers place well at Sterling
STERLING — The Ellsworth Bearcat track team traveled to Sterling to compete April 19.
“Our throwers will continue to place well at meets this year,” Head Coach Nick Rodriguez said. “Several had their best marks this season or personal records.”
In the discus, sophomore Reagan Hansen placed third with a throw of 107 feet, 4 inches.
In the javelin, junior Keeley Pflughoeft finished third and freshman Sophie Homolka finished sixth. Pflughoeft threw 115 feet, 1 inch and Homolka threw 103 feet, 0 inches.
For the boys, junior Sumner Homolka threw 147 feet, 2 inches in the javelin.
“Junior Jessa Schultz had a good day in the hurdles,” Rodriguez said. “Senior Wyatt Pelzel ran well in the 400 and 200 meters. Freshman Molly Erlich continues to run well in the distance races.”
Schultz placed sixth in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 18.73 and 54.67, respectively.
Ehrlich placed second in the mile with her time of 5:56.22 and first in the 2-mile, finishing with a time of 13:24.77. Pelzel ended with sixth in the 400-meter with his time of 54.88.
“I’m improving with each meet,” Schultz said. “I’m taking it step-bystep in practice in order to be ready for regionals.”
For field events, senior Katelyn Soukup competed in high jump and placed fifth by clearing a height of 4 feet, 8 inches.
Sophomore Cameron Gardner finished sixth in pole vault by clearing his height of 9 feet, 0 inches.
Overall, the girls’ team placed seventh and the boys’ team placed 12th.
“On the track, the team had a limited number of participants as a couple kids are dealing with some injuries,” Rodriguez said. “Right now, the concern is getting everyone healthy and those that are healthy to keep them healthy.”
The team will compete at the Beloit Relays April 26.
