Turf transformation
Elllsworth Elementary playground gets summer upgrades
While the first day of school is less than a month away, the Ellsworth Elementary School playground is ready for recess.
In early June, workers removed the old turf to install a new surface.
“I received a few inquiries on recycling the old turf,” USD 327 Superintendent Deena Hilbig said. “That was the original plan, however, when removal occurred, it became apparent there was no life left in it. It was filled with sand and very deteriorated, thus we had to dispose of it.”
The old turf was installed in 2010, and nearly 5,000 square feet were installed to replace the former surface.
“Over time, the turf had become worn out and was compromised by tree roots causing uneven surfaces posing safety risks to children,” Hilbig said. “Updating the playground surface ensures that it is in good condition and meets current safety standards.”
Cost of replacing the turf, which entailed removing the old turf surface, site prep including removal of tree roots and reinforcing divot and turnkey installation of Synthetic Turf including nailer boards, shipping, sand infill and turf, was about $48,000. The project was funded by USD 327.
“A well-maintained and updated playground enhances the overall appeal of the community, making it a desirable place for families to visit and spend time,” Hilbig said. “Further, in an age where screen time is prevalent, an inviting playground encourages children to engage in outdoor play, which is essential for their physical and mental wellbeing.”
The elementary school playground received additional upgrades over the summer.
“The turf project was completed in conjunction with the install of rubber mulch,” Hilbig said, noting the mulch was installed by a different company. “The two projects were interdependent as they sit adjacent to each other, making the timing important.”
The entire project took about seven days to complete.
A few additional improvements are still planned as the clock ticks down to the end of summer break. Hilbig said a sandbox will be added and the large trees will have some branches thinned out to reduce possible damage as well as improve overall tree health.
“This will ensure many more years of shade on our playground,” she said.
During recess, the playground teems with screaming grade schoolers throughout the school year. After school hours, the green space and playground are popular destinations.
“We are excited to have a playground our students can enjoy during the school day and offer to the public after school hours,” Hilbig said. “It has been a place of play and enjoyment in the Ellsworth community for years, and we wish for that to continue.
“An updated and safe playground strengthens community bonds as families come together, fostering a supportive and connected neighborhood.”
