Spellers compete at annual bee

Feb. 14 was a very special Valentine’s Day for Ellsworth Jr./Sr. High School eighth grade student Kinly Place.Kinly, the daughter of Kelvi and Karlton Place of Ellsworth, won the 2024 Ellsworth County Spelling Bee in the school’s Performing Arts Center.

Appraiser testifies in Topeka

Ellsworth County Appraiser Carl Miller gave a brief update to the Ellsworth County Commissioners Monday on his Feb. 8 testimony before state lawmakers in Topeka on House Resolution 5022, which deals with the 30 percent classification on all-terrain vehicles.“I think it went well,” Miller said.

Women gather for conference

About 30 women gathered Jan. 16 for the She Is Conference, sponsored by Grow Ellsworth County.The conference discussed an array of topics, including freeing up schedules by saying no, the invisible workload of women and speaking the truth.

County talks granite repair

Ellsworth County Commissioners met with Ralph Doubrava and Kirk Robson Monday regarding how to stabilize the granite on the front of the Ellsworth County Courthouse.

USD 112 redraws district boundaries

CLAFLIN — At the December Central Plains USD 112 Board of Education meeting, the board voted to move forward with the redrawing of district member boundaries. These boundaries haven’t been updated since 2010.

Afamiliar face was appointed by Mayor Dan Finnegan Monday to fill the upcoming vacancy in the city attorney’s job.Finnegan appointed attorney Patrick Hoffman to fill the seat being vacated by current city attorney Melissa Miller, whose last day in Ellsworth will be Feb. 29.

Biking Across Kansas celebrates 50 years

The 50th Biking Across Kansas tour, the annual celebration of bicycling and the Sunflower State, will hit the highways and byways June 8-15.Organizers revealed the special golden anniversary route at 2 p.m. Jan. 20.Online registration will open at 6 a.m. Jan. 29 at bak.org.
