Thomas Wayne Warttig, 72, passed away Feb. 29, 2024, at his home in rural Ellsworth County. He was born Oct. 19, 1951, in Ellsworth to Benno H. and Elda Marie (Bruning) Warttig. He was a farmer and stockman and a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Ellsworth. He also served his country in the U.S. Army and was a proud member of the NRA.

Marilyn Jo Homolka, 79, passed away Monday, Feb. 26, 2024, in Salina, Kan. She was born March 19, 1944, in Ellsworth, Kan., to Joe and Emilie (Mattas) Lank. Marilyn married James Homolka in Ellsworth on Nov. 9, 1968. She was a lifetime resident of Ellsworth County, where she was a member of Ellsworth Immanuel Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post 174 Auxiliary.

Stephanie Lou Doubrava, 71, passed away Feb. 24, 2024, in Ellsworth, Kan. She was born on Jan. 27, 1953, in Wichita, Kan., and was welcomed home to Don and Virginia (Britton) Small. She married Craig Doubrava on Aug. 3, 1972, in Wichita.

Susan Sebesta Clough, 78, died Jan. 1, 2024, in Louisville, Ky.

Services will be held March 15. A graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the Ellsworth Cemetery. A celebration of life will follow at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Ellsworth. Family will be present to greet friends at the church.

I was fortunate enough to be asked to write a series of articles on volunteerism in our community. The first one was “The Benefits of Volunteerism,” which outlined some of the advantages of choosing to volunteer. The second article, “Where Have All of the Good Volunteers Gone?”, discussed reasons why volunteerism has recently declined. This third piece will simply lay out three volunteer leadership opportunities that exist in our community. Hopefully, a few volunteers will step forward to help.
