Helen Shirley (Ptacek) Reeves (1936-2018)

Helen Shirley (Ptacek) Reeves passed away Monday, April 16, 2018 at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in Wichita, Kan. at the age of 81.  
She was born on Dec. 14, 1936 in Dorrance, Kan. to Frank C. and Anna M. (Kepka) Ptacek.  After graduating from Dorrance High School with the Class of 1954, she went on to earn her associate’s degree from Dominican School of Nursing in Great Bend, Kan.  On Dec. 30, 1957 she was united in marriage to Richard E. Reeves at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson, Kan. They were blessed with eight children.
Helen worked as a registered nurse for 32 years before retiring. She was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church and the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. She also served with the Altar Society. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and cooking; but the greatest love of her life was her husband and family. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whenever she had opportunity.

Velda Mae (Rowe) Robson was born July 10, 1926 to A.W.  and Katie (Sexton) Rowe in Solomon Kan.  She graduated from Abilene High School in the Class of 1944. Following graduation she worked at Abilene National Bank.

Helen L. Mason (1927-2018)

Helen L. Mason, 90, passed away   April 11, 2018.

She was born May 22, 1927 in Pryor, Okla. and grew up in Ellsworth, Kan. She retired from nursing at St. Joseph Hospital. Helen enjoyed sewing, crafts and was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, Wichita, since 1961. She was preceded in death by former husband, Dale Mason.
Helen is survived by six children, three sons, Doug, Tom (Jennifer) and Donald (Debbie) Mason; three daughters, Debra (Paul) DiZerga, Eileen Stucky and Diane Abbott; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Evelyn Gourley, Glennys Bruning, Ralph Naegele and Jolene Krier.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Bethany Lutheran Church, 1000 W. 26th St. S, Wichita, Kan. 67217 with visitation one hour prior.

James Clifford 'Jim' Homan


 James Clifford “Jim” Homan, 74, of Ellsworth passed from this life into the presence of his Savior, Monday morning, March 26, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center.
Jim was the sixth of 12 children, born to Clifford A. and Louisa Z. (Mefford) Homan of Fairbury Nebraska. He and Penny (Ahrens) were joined in marriage July 28, 1973 at Weeping Water, Neb. They moved to Ellsworth, Kan. in 1975. To this marriage were added two children, James C. “Jimmy” Homan II Oct. 19, 1974 and Debbie C. Homan March 25, 1976. Jim worked various jobs, including ABCO Wire and Metal in Russell Kansas and EL-KAN. He  retried from the Kansas National Guard after 27 years of faithful service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wilson.

Aldred Donald Panzer (1933-2018)

Alfred Donald Panzer, 84, of Lincoln, died Saturday, April 7, 2018, in Lincoln. He was born May 5, 1933, in Kanopolis, to Alfred William and Cora Martha (Schneider) Panzer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Jolene Yager and Marlene Brown.

Left to celebrate his life include his wife, Wilma Mae (Steinle) Panzer, of the home; son, Donald (Carol) Panzer, of Ellsworth; daughter, Vickie (William) Haun, of Wilson; grandchildren, Sydney (Melissa) Panzer, of Salina, Randi (Jacob) Haun-Hardman, of Prairie Village, Steven Haun, of Halstead; great-grandson, Avery.

Don served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, and was awarded the China Service Medal Extended. He is a lifetime member of VFW Post 7928 and the American Legion. He served as Sheriff of Lincoln County Kansas for 22 years.

Visitation is from 1-7 p.m. Monday, April 9, at Hall Chapel, Lincoln, with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m.

April Anne Allard

     God’s Special Angels welcomed our precious daughter into the arms of Jesus after months of suffering.
     April was born on July 8, 1968, in Dallas, Texas; She went to Heaven on Monday, March 26, 2018. April’s love for Jesus was followed by her love for gospel music and military collectibles. Years of competing in Special Olympics filled her room with medals.
     April is survived by her parents, Dan and Tonie Allard; brother and sister-in-law, Adam and Sharon Allard; sister and brother-in-law, Alesha and David Rogers; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
     She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
     The family requests donations to the following in lieu of flowers: Bridgewood Farms (center for special adults), 11680 Rose Road, Conroe, Texas 77303.

Jack Arthur Zvolanek

     Jack Arthur Zvolanek, 91, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2018 in Ellsworth, Kan. He was born Feb. 13, 1927 in Ellsworth, to Anton and Sophia (Hajny) Zvolanek, and was raised on a farm east of Black Wolf, Kan. He attended South Excelsior Elementary School south of Black Wolf, helped his dad as well as neighbors with farm work and graduated from Ellsworth High School, where he played football every year.
     During Jack’s senior year, he and several of his friends joined the U.S. Navy to serve in World War II. Jack’s tour of duty was on a troop carrying ship to the Pacific War Zone. After the war, was over, he and his buddies returned to Ellsworth to finish their senior year of high school and took classes to get their G.E.D. certificates. In 1947 Jack was hired as a lineman by S.W. Bell Telephone Company, and worked two years as an unlocated lineman.

David A. Rains (1955-2018)

David A. Rains, 62, of Holyrood and Sterling passed away Friday, March 30, 2018, at the Hutchinson hospital.
He was born Oct. 26, 1955, in Salina to Charles and Lois (Heer) Rains. David graduated from Salina Central High School in 1974. He married Debra Glover on March 6, 1976. He was a salesman, working at Otasco, Schendel Pest Control, Western Southern Life Insurance and the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter. He was a member of the St. Paul’s UCC of Holyrood.
Survivors include his wife of the home; sons, Nicholas of Fremont, Calif, Thomas (TJ) of Lake St. Louis, Mo. and William of Great Bend; a sister, Linda Rains of Texas; five grandchildren; and two grandchildren of his heart.
A Celebration of Life Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Holyrood, with the Rev. Debra Rains presiding.
Memorials are suggested to the church, P.O. Box 26, Holyrood, Kan. 67456.
