Always think safety around chemicals
Agriculture is the world’s second largest source of employment and one of the most dangerous. Many agricultural workers suffer occupational accidents and illness each year, caused by exposure to chemicals and working with machinery.
When deciding to use chemicals make sure to read and follow the label for your own safety as well as the safety of others.
Be aware of your surroundings and be familiar with the herbicide you are using and the potential hazards.
Here is a few things to think about before spraying:
• Did I read and understand the label?
• Do I know what weed I am spraying for?
• Do I know what chemical to use?
• Is the wind blowing? Will it drift?
• Did I look for sensitive crops?
• The cost. Is it worth spraying financially?
Exposure to chemicals can lead to a variety of immediate or long-term health effects, including headache, poisoning, burns, respiratory illness and birth defects.
Please be safe when using chemicals. If you have any questions, please call the Midway Extension District office in Ellsworth, (785) 472-4442, or the Ellsworth County Noxious Weed Department, (785) 472-3132.
