Grain prices down for the week

Prices paid for grain at the Ellsworth Co-op at the end of the business day, Monday, April 1, were:

Wheat, bu. — $4.05, down 14 cents.

Milo, bu. — $2.92, down 13 cents.

Soybeans, bu. — $7.73 down 11 cents.

Corn, bu. — $3.32, down 13 cents.

The co-op has locations in Ellsworth, Black Wolf, Farhman, Hitschmann, Holyrood and Kanopolis.

Local jury delivers guilty verdict

An Ellsworth County jury this past week found Lori Mayfield, 47, Wichita, guilty of one felony count of mistreatment of a dependent adult, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said.

Mayfield was charged with the crime in connection with purchasing a vehicle for herself with funds from her impaired adult daughter’s assets, for which she had been appointed conservator by court order. Ellsworth County District Court Judge Steve Johnson presided over the trial. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.

The case was investigated by the Kansas Department for Children and Families Adult Protective Services and the Kanopolis Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Paul Brothers of the attorney general’s Fraud and Abuse Litigation Division.

Defibrillator available at ball field

Bonnie Peterman, a registered nurse for the Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo School District, recently received a grant from the Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation to purchase an artificial external defibrillator to be housed in the concessions building at the Ellsworth Recreation Center baseball fields.

Peterman said the defibrillator will be available for use in cardiac emergencies during high school baseball/softball games, 4-H sponsored activities, fairs, rodeos and other public functions.
