County doesn’t object to ecodevo change

By
Alan Rusch

Ellsworth County commissioners voiced no objection Monday to a name change being considered by the Smoky Hill Development Corporation.

Stacie Schmidt, Smoky Hill executive director, said the current name doesn’t say what the SHDC does. In addition, she said SHDC is often confused with the Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation. If changed, SHCF would revert back to Ellsworth County Economic Development.

Schmidt said she discussed the matter with Paul J. Kasper, county attorney and he did not have any objections either.

No action was required by the commissioners.

In other business:

• Commissioner Kermit Rush presented Kasper with a letter the county recently received from Bob Raney asking whether the county could sanction those who move the Butterfield Overland Dispatch markers placed on the public right-of-ways in Ellsworth County.

Kasper said the letter is similar to letters the county has received in the past, and he wasn’t exactly sure how to resolve the situation because he doesn’t know who originally installed the markers.

Kasper noted there is a state statute that prevents any defacing or altering of historical landmarks. Therefore, an additional ordinance is not needed.
