FARMERS STORE
ROBBED OF $637 LAST WEDNESDAY
Sometime during the night Wednesday or early Thursday morning, a robber or robbers entered the Farmers Union Jack and Jill Store through the back door and got away with $637 in cash and bills. Entry was made by chiseling the lock off of the back door, and then peeling the door of the large safe until they reached the bars which protect the pins in the hinges. The bars were bent, releasing the pins and permitting the opening of the safe door.
John Ploutz discovered the robbery when he reported for work Thursday morning. He is the meat cutter at the store.
John Klema manager of the store, stated Wednesday morning of this week that although the contents of the safe had been searched and scattered, nothing was damaged. No trace of the robbers has been found. It is believed they went out the front door.

OLYMPIC RECORD
Tom Purma, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Purma, is claimed to be the only youth in Kansas to ever win a track championship in the Olympics. Tom, a 12 year old seventh grader in the Scott City schools, last summer competed in the softball throw at the junior AAU track meet at Lawrence, at which he set a new world record. Now he has received word that his throw was the best in national competition, giving him first place in the Junior Olympics. Both of his parents are instructors in the Scott City schools, and claim Wilson as their home, coming to their farm south of Wilson during vacations and in the summer months, during which time Charles Purma engages in farming.

BREAK GROUND
FOR HALL
Ground-breaking ceremonies were held for the O’Donnell Hall at St. Francis Boys Home Monday afternoon. Ann O’Donnell, eldest of the surviving members of the O’Donnell family, handed the shovel to the Rev. Arnold Lewis, Salina Episcopal bishop, at the ceremony. This was Miss O’Donnell’s 95th birthday. The weather was ideal, which permitted the older participants in the services to be present. Other members of the O’Donnell family present were Lydia O’Donnell and Mrs. Marian Fleming, both of Ellsworth. They are the children of the late John and Elizabeth Hill O’Donnell. Other survivors of the family are Mrs. Ethel Mary Schwartz, of Salina, and J.C. and Dr. Arthur O’Donnell of Junction City.
Besides Bishop Lewis, clergymen at the ceremony were the Rev. Robert Mize, director of the Home: Rev. William Craig, administrative assistant; and Rev. Peter Francis, head of the Ellsworth unit, and the Rev Fred Heffner, of Ellsworth. Refreshments were served to the guests after the ground breaking ceremony.
