Farmers don’t forget the County fair.
A good soaking rain Tuesday night.
School commences in this city next Monday.
The Old Settlers reunion of this county has been postponed until spring.
Any person desirous of taking a child, two and a half years old to raise and will give a good home can learn particulars at this office.
During the month of August there were 3,481,360 pounds of freight shipped from the railway station in this city.
We are informed by a reliable citizen of this county, and who is a large cattle dealer, that over 150,000 worth of cattle have been sold out of the county since January last.

Last Monday D.H. Fry brought in from his farm on the Mulberry, a wagon load of fine peaches. He also presented us with the largest and finest head of cabbage that we have seen this year.
Ned Wellington sold John Lockup one of the Bob Martin farms this week for $2,600.
Big loads of Manhattan apples have been selling on the streets the past week at 90 cents a bushel.
Dr. Geo. Seitz, this week, papered the Roth barber shop and it has the appearance of a perfect parlor.
The city authorities ought to cut the weeds and sand burrs that line the back streets, ladies find it very annoying when out walking.

Rex Clemons ran a huge splinter in his left hand Monday while loading furniture and was compelled to quit work.
Miss Mabel Faris will leave the last of the week for Hoisington where she will teach in the high school the coming year.
Fred Jenning, who is in Ireland on business and pleasure, will sail for home on the 23rd of this month, arriving in Ellsworth about the first of October.
L.J. Masopust attended the wedding yesterday of Miss Lena Claussen and William Koetkemeier, which took place southwest of Wilson. Louis reported a big crowd and a big time.
As John Jiricek and family of Noble township were driving to Beverly in their car Sunday, they turned out of the road to allow a motorcycle to pass and in doing so the car overturned. Mr. Jiricek suffered a broken rib and four of the children were badly bruised, two of the girls requiring stitches. Mrs. Jiricek and the baby which she was holding in her arms were uninjured.

Ellsworth’s second heavy rain of the season and the heaviest in years fell throughout Monday night, flooding lowlands, sending creeks out of their banks and washed out two and one-half miles of Fresco railroad tracks between here and Janssen [Station]. Within the 12 hours between noon and midnight 5.56 inches of water fell throughout the territory.
Fred Banfield received several cracked ribs when he fell from the scaffolding while shingling at his home in the northwest part of the city.
Three hundred fifty-seven bags of grasshopper poison have been secured to date, it was reported from the Farm Bureau office last Friday.
Ladies of the Ellsworth County Farm Bureau units filled the cookie jar at Fort Riley cavalry replacement training center this week.

Joseph J. Kottas, Ellsworth, won $84 in the Ellsworth Jackpot Day drawing Tuesday. He was present in Nemechek & Benson Grocery. Other names drawn but not present were Pauline Sparks, Ellsworth, $52 and Roy Janssen, Holyrood, $32.
Cheryl Elaine Kempke, Ellsworth and Rex Sloan Leforgee, Oberlin, exchanged marriage vows and rings the afternoon of September 3, 1966 at the First Methodist Church, Ellsworth. Mr. and Mrs. Warren D. Kempke, Ellsworth and Mr. and Mrs. John C. Leforgee, Wichita, are parents of the couple.

Dr. Ronald Whitmer, a native of Wilson, will become Ellsworth’s third physician beginning October 1. Whitmer is a general practitioner and a graduate of the Kansas City School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Seven new teachers were hired by USD 327 for the 1981-82 school year: Judy Weber, KMS music teacher; Dennis Boepple, EHS guidance counselor; Christy Erichsen, EHS English teacher; Roger Foran, EHS math teacher; Patty Loerence KMS learning disabilities teacher; Cheryl Tomson, school psychologist and Richard Kroll, EHS vo-ag teacher.
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Bender, Sunrise Beach, Mo., will be honored at an open house Sunday, Sept. 13, in observance of their 40th wedding anniversary. The open house will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Ellsworth Country Club.
Two new teachers have joined the Quivira Heights High School faculty. Nathalea Kaufman is assistant girls’ volleyball and basketball coach, Susan Brixey teaches English, speech and drama.

As expected, a state building committee Friday approved the final site plans for the Ellsworth Correctional Work Facility, clearing the way for the state to let bids for construction.
An unknown amount of cash was taken in a burglary at the Pizza Hut sometime between midnight and 6 a.m., August 28, reported Police Chief Harold Hanson.
Ellsworth and area residents turned out by the thousands to view the historic Union Pacific steam engine No. 8444 as it paused on the Union Pacific track downtown. The Ellsworth High School Marching Band was on hand for the festivities.
Prices being paid at the close of the market in Ellsworth were: Wheat, $2.15; Milo, $2.30 cwt.
Bobby Heitschmidt of the Ellsworth County Stabilization and Conservation Service, received 25 year awards recently for his service as executive director.
Gayla Choitz, has been named the recipient of an Art Department Award at Barton County Community College for the 1986-87 academic year.
