September 15, 1881
Mrs. Sam Riddell is visiting relatives at Leavenworth.
The man who fails in business but continues to live in luxury, is a thief.
A. Schmidt has just received a large and splendid stock of boots and shoes.
The opera house is looming up and will be completed in time for the theatrical and concert season.
L.H. Westerman of this county had the largest beets and corn on exhibition at the Bismark Grove fair.
L.H. Westerman informs us that he will start a general coal yard in this city in a few days and will keep all kinds of coal for sale.
The late rains soaked the ground to a depth of 14 inches in this county, so we are informed by parties who have “dug down that far.”

Miss Maria Chase and her little adopted brother went to Kansas City Tuesday night for a short visit.
Mr. J.F. Reed of Kanopolis was over this week buying paper and ornaments to trim off a house for Mr. Rabottom in that town.
Handy and Goff have put a new frame under their scales.
There was another pistol row Sunday down north of Terra Cotta, between Knowles’ hearder and Melee Oronan over the old Santa Fe Trail road, the same that engaged attention in the long suit at Ellsworth last summer. It seems snubbed’s bound to die over that road or pasture yet.

A boy was born at the Ellsworth hospital Tuesday, Sept. 12, to Mrs. Ann Hilderman of Lorraine.
Strayed one milk cow, color red with one short horn. Finder please notify this office.
Dr. Wm. Scott will arrive tomorrow from Sharon Springs to take charge of the Drs. Downs and Bowles practice.
Walter Carey has bought the S.G. Morton building on lower Douglas avenue next to Masopust Bros. and will move his barber shop there. He owned this building once before.
Dried loganberries, 15 cents package; macaroni or spaghetti, 8 cents package; one pound country lard, 15 cents; one gallon apples, 25 cents; one gallon sliced peaches, 45 cents. — John Pressney Jr., cash grocer.

The success of last year’s project of purchasing an inhalator for the community through the subscription of magazines, inspired the American Legion to continue their good works this year, so they are planning to purchase a fracture bed. This bed will be available to any patient in the county needing such service.
Local elevators were paying $1.02 a bushel for wheat Monday, the highest price offered for the cereal in Ellsworth since the record year of 1937 when $1.30 was the high bid.
Ellsworth friends received the announcement of the marriage of Miss Hulda Liss and James Dick of Ellsworth, at Leoti, Kan., on Sunday, Sept. 7, 1941.

September 15, 1966
Two young boys from Kanopolis were reported missing late Monday, September 12, according to the sheriff ’s office. They were sighted Tuesday between three and four miles west of Ellsworth on the railroad tracks. Deputy Sheriff Jim Doubrava picked them up after a chase of about three miles, they had crossed the river and gone south. Each was reported to be carrying a rifle which had been hidden, but they were recovered.
Harold Westerhaus was named to replace Don Snyder on the Ellsworth City Council at its regular September meeting Tuesday evening, according to Clerk, Mrs. Gladys Wagner.
The Ellsworth High School band will participate in Band Day at Hutchinson on Monday, September 19. The 51 piece band will march in downtown Hutchinson at 9 a.m. under the direction of Douglas Talbott, band director.
Maynard W. Cunningham announces the engagement of his daughter Jeanne Lee Cunningham to Donald Lea Barta, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor A. Barta, Ellsworth.

The Bonilla Family Mexican Dancers entertained during Kanopolis’ Fiesta festivities Saturday, September 5.
Jason Tillett and his brother Chris are unicycling their way from Rochester, N.Y., to Los Angeles, California. The brothers stopped in Carneiro Tuesday morning, September 8 and planned to spend the night at Holyrood.
Mr. and Mrs. Thayer Smith, Ellsworth announce the marriage of their daughter Jerilyn Gay Smith, to Scotty Dee DeWitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy McCalman, Spearman, Tex.
Marvin Westhusin, the driver of a 1976 Honda motorcycle, was treated and released at Ellsworth County Veterans Memorial Hospital for injuries received in a September 7 accident.
Westhusin, 39, Ellsworth, was treated for abrasions on his right leg.
Ellsworth County commissioners met with Jim Cochran last week to discuss emergency preparedness. Cochran is the nuclear civil protector planner from the adjutant general’s office, Topeka.

Dane Britton, Ellsworth banker, city councilmember and chairman of the industrial development committee, was honored last Thursday as one of three Kansas Volunteers of the Year by the Kansas Industrial Developers Association.
Ten years ago, when the Ellsworth-Kanopolis school board voted 4-3 to establish a middle school in Kanopolis and move all the elementary students to Ellsworth, patrons throughout the district voiced their displeasure. Now, however, one is hard-pressed to find anyone who is not pleased with the way the decision turned out.
Last year, when Quivira Heights’ volleyball team was one of the top 1-A schools in the area, the Lady T-birds” biggest problem was serving. This year, as the team returns nearly all of its starting lineup, poor serving again haunted the squad as it came away from the Otis-Bison triangular with a 1-1 record.
Edward and Alma Homolka of rural Wilson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner at the Holiday Inn Holidome in Salina.

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Matoush, rural Holyrood, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at St. Mary’s Parish House, Holyrood.
Hosting their open house will be their daughter, Mrs. Gary (Betty) Hunter and family of Wilson. The couple has one grandson.
Elmer Matoush and the former Mayme Bannon were married June 1, 1941 in Lincoln. He is a retired farmer, and the couple has lived on a farm north of Holyrood all their married lives.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend. They request no gifts, please.
