The pungent odor of smoke still hung in the air on Douglas Avenue in downtown Ellsworth Monday morning.

Yellow “do not cross” tape flapped in the gusty wind that whipped down the historic business district. The lack of cars in parking stalls in the town’s 200 block gave Ellsworth an almost “ghost town” feeling.

Clusters of spectators gathered on the east side of Douglas, shaking their heads in dismay.
