Lorraine addresses BNSF property

By
Alan Rusch

LORRAINE — The ownership of former railroad property was discussed at the June 18 meeting of the Lorraine City Council.

City attorney Theresa Staudinger said she had found that the BNSF Railroad had abandoned the property and returned control to the city.

As a result, council members requested Staudinger to send a letter to the railroad to get a deed to the property or to clarify ownership.

Gail Hiechel of Lorraine asked if the city could go ahead and mow the property. Larry Klug, city maintenance officer, said Mayor Dennis Boyer told him the city shouldn’t do anything with the property until it receives a deed or has clear ownership of the property.

Boyer was absent from the meeting.

In other business:

• Lorraine resident Jim Janssen said a lot of the potholes filled on East Wichita Avenue look good. He thought the city could probably repair the rest of them with 30 more bags of asphalt. After Janssen spoke, council member Barbara Crombie made a motion to purchase 30 more bags of asphalt patch. Her motion was approved.

• George Hiechel, council president, updated the council on the placement of the storm shelter. It was installed June 12 between the city hall and the Lorraine Fire Department. Hiechel said that was the best place for the shelter because there are two security cameras covering it from each side and it is visible to the public.

The next meeting of the Lorraine City Council will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at city hall.
