LORRAINE — The second time proved to be the charm for the City of Lorraine.

At the Oct. 22 meeting of the Lorraine City Council, council member Cassy Vedder said the city received an $8,300 grant from the Greater Salina Community Foundation of the Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation to purchase a new mosquito sprayer.

City clerk Michael Boyer said the city applied for a grant last fall, but was denied. Application was made this spring and was successful.

In other business:

• Larry Klug, maintenance supervisor, said the city’s water loss dropped from 38 percent last month to 20 percent this month. He noted, however, no changes have been made in the system during that time.

• A request by the USD 112 Futures Committee to use the council meeting room for a meeting was approved. No date for the meeting has been set, however.

• Kim Travnichek of Lorraine, reporting for her husband, Lorraine Fire Chief Joe Travnichek, said the Oct. 5 potluck supper at the fire station was successful.

“We had a great turnout,” she said, adding several former Lorraine residents also attended.

• Eric Dirks of Lorraine said he purchased the dilapidated house on the northwest corner of Main Street and Wichita Avenue. He plans to demolish it.
