Lorraine sets budget hearing

LORRAINE — At the July 16 meeting of the Lorraine City Council, approval was given to have a public hearing on the 2020 city budget at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at city hall.

According to city clerk Michael Boyer, approval was also given to two related matters. First, the August council meeting will also be at 7 p.m. on Aug. 13, at city hall, instead of Aug. 20.

Second, approval was given to publish the notice of the public hearing in the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter. It appears on Page B9.

In other business:

• Mayor Dennis Boyer raised a question about ownership of the old BNSF Railroad property in Lorraine. He asked if it was documented that the railroad reverted ownership to the city. And if so, he wants to know if the city wants to keep ownership of the property or deed it over to the adjoining property owners. City attorney Theresa Staudinger did not attend the meeting, so discussion on the question was tabled until the August meeting.

• Joe Togersen of Lorraine thanked the council for patching the potholes in the streets.

“It’s nice not having do dodge potholes,” he said.

• Council member Joe Visocsky asked Mayor Boyer if he had a candidate to appoint for city compliance officer. Boyer responded that no one has agreed to take the job, so he is still looking for candidates.
