HOLYROOD — Don Siemsen was probably 9 years old when his grandfather treated the youngster to his first train ride.

The pair, along with Don’s brothers and cousins, boarded the train at the Santa Fe Depot in Holyrood and traveled round trip to tiny Galatia, about a four-hour journey.

Siemsen remembers spending most of his time looking out the windows as the Kansas landscape rolled by.
