Book is not age appropriate
Dear Editor,
Accusations that some parents are seeking to ban the book “wallflower,” are not accurate. I’m not aware of anyone making that request of USD 327.
The opposite has likely been the case as more attention has been drawn to this book. It’s available in the library and the teacher continued to encourage students to read it. Don’t worry, your social agenda is well preserved. The concern raised with the school board is that
The concern raised with the school board is that subjects covered in the book are not appropriate or necessary for an 8th grade language arts class. It conveys no literary technique that can’t be taught with a less controversial book. The teacher made a poor decision in selecting the material. She encouraged the students to visit with her, not their parents, if they had concerns or questions. She misled the administration about the content of the book. Any of those actions should have disciplinary consequences, and in my opinion, result in termination.
The teacher is welcome to teach the material to a more appropriate age group.
Perhaps a sociology or psychology class at a left wing liberal arts college, not middle school in USD 327.
Sincerely,
Clayton Huseman
