Reaction to ruined plans can make all the difference

Ellsworth County’s two school districts have done a good job making sure members of the Class of 2020 received their due — despite a pandemic that shattered traditional graduation plans.

Neither the Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo School District nor Central Plains have given up on more traditional ceremonies this summer. Meanwhile, reactions to this year’s health crisis have provided great life lessons for graduates as they move to the next stage.

We spent Saturday in Little River, where the school district hung photos of graduates from downtown light poles and friends and family drove by yelling their congradulations and distributing gifts to seniors. We probably would have preferred a little more social distancing, but the creativity of the drive-by graduation shower was impressive.

We also have enjoyed the photographs of Ellsworth High School seniors on the Ellsworth Elementary School fence across from the I-R office on Douglas Avenue. We hope the display becomes a yearly tradition.

Congratulations, graduates, and remember — even in disappoint there can be reasons for celebration. It’s your choice.
