In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote, the Independent-Reporter is asking readers to share stories of significant women in their lives.

It can be a mother or another relative, a teacher, a neighbor — any woman who you admired and/or influenced your life.

The stories don’t have to be long, several hundred words or less. Deadline is April 30. We will publish them May 7 in our Mother’s Day edition. Call me at (785) 472-5085 if you have questions.

Send them to indy@eaglecom.net or 304 N. Douglas Ave., Ellsworth, Kan. 67439.

A shout out to the Ellsworth Steak House and a mysterious someone who left a $20 bill at the front counter following a recent legislative forum sponsored by the Ellsworth County Farm Bureau and the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter.

Owner Rick Davis said he and his wife, Tina, decided not to charge for the event, which attracted about two dozen residents to listen and ask questions of Kansas Sen. Rick Wilborn, R-McPherson, and Rep. Steven Johnson, R-Assaria. After the forum, Rick Davis handed me two checks — one for Farm Bureau and the other for the newspaper — to cover our expenses.

Instead, following the lead of Rick and Tina, the checks — along with the $20 — were delivered to the Ellsworth County Health Department for the local Food Bank.

A huge thank you for the donations. You guys are the true definition of community.

Speaking of community.

The Kiwanis Club Home and Garden Show is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 21, in the ECMC Administration Building, north of the hospital.

There is no charge for admission and proceeds from vendor sales and a gun raffle go to Kiwanis Club projects directed mostly at youth.

An added attraction — the event is actually three in one. The Ellsworth County Medical Center will conduct a health fair, while the auxiliary stages a bake/garage sale. Great way to spend a Saturday.
