Support the local cancer fund
In the past fiscal year, the Ellsworth County Cancer Fund has distributed $20,234.79 from the Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation and $7,522.30 from other local sources. That money has gone to cancer patients for hotels, food, to pay their electric bills ... the list goes on. If there is a need, the cancer fund is there to fill it.
Volunteers recently finished their annual fundraiser at Ellsworth High School. The event raised 51,297, some of which goes into the cancer fund’s holdings in the Smoky Hill Charitable Foundation. The holdings generate much of the money the cancer fund uses to support Ellsworth County residents with cancer.
We are fortunate to have a local organization operated by volunteers we know and trust. And the dollars stay in Ellsworth County — that’s another huge plus.
Organizers continue to spread the word about the fund. Volunteer Kathy Carreon recently told us that the need for services continues to grow and that may be because “more people are becoming aware that we are here for them.”

Splash pad dedication is Friday
Everyone have a fun — and safe — July 4.
The I-R office will be closed Thursday and Friday to give our dedicated and overworked employees an extra day off.
However, we still plan to be at Friday’s 11:30 a.m. dedication of the Kiwanis Club Splash Pad in Preisker Park. Congratulations to everyone who had a hand in its construction.

Visit the Geneseo Museum
If you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend, drive over to Geneseo and learn about the town’s museum. A group of local volunteers is in the process of restoring the former home of E.D. Janzen, a man of many degrees and talents. He also believed in visitors from outer space and has the collection to prove it. The city-owned museum will be open from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
