September 22, 1881

Owen O’Connell presented us with a jug filled with amber cane syrup last week. It was a splendid article and he has our thanks for the same.

L.W. and I.J. Thomas have just received a large stock of goods at their new store near the post office.

C.F. Clark has had his new barn painted.

We will be pleased to take potatoes on subscription.

John G. McCormack has 35 acres of wheat up and looking fine.

J.W. Phelps is building quite an addition to his residence.

We observed several wagon loads of apples and peaches on our streets last week.

September 17, 1891

The state fair is running at full blast at Topeka this week.

David Showman and family are back to Ellsworth for the winter.

A mover came through last week with three young wolves and offered them as pets for $1. A farmer jumped at the bargain. The county pays $3 for each wolf scalp and so he made $8 clear on his pets. The plutocrat scare don’t stand in this man’s way very much.

Ellsworth is selling Kanopolis and Lyons rock salt and Hutchinson fine salt day and night, while the Ellsworth salt hole still hangs one-third of the way down.

Harmon Williams and others are threshing a big crop of wheat on Ash Creek this week. Simon Cadwell threshed his last week and sold on the track at Midway for 73 cents a bushel.

September 21, 1916

We are paying: for live hens, 12 cents per pound; for live spring chickens, 15 cents per pound; for live old roosters, 7 cents per pound; for live turkeys, 15 cents per pound. — Ellsworth Produce Co.

A meeting of the patrons of Ellsworth School District has been called for Monday, September 25, at 2:30 p.m. at the Golden Belt Theatre for the purpose of voting on a site. This became necessary when it was learned that the district could not legally buy a large tract of land for a school site.

Wanted — A live automobile agent for Ellsworth and Lincoln counties. If you are looking for an agency with a winning future, write Box No. 369, Salina, Kansas.

A boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ira Barton, on Tuesday, September 19.

A girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Leland Jones, living southwest of town, Tuesday September 19.

A boy was born Sunday to Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Bradford, living just over the Saline County line.

September 18, 1941

Two Ellsworth County schools are taking advantage of surplus marketing administration, WPA and NYA assistance in serving hot lunches to children, according to the local welfare department.

Carneiro and Kanopolis are the two county schools benefiting by hot lunches and sixteen rural schools have applied for surplus commodities to supply their students with lunch at noon.

Mrs. Verona Pflughoeft, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pflughoeft of this city, became the bride of Fred Meier, son of Ephraim Meier of Lincoln, Saturday evening at eight o’clock at the Lutheran parsonage in Lincoln.

Mr. and Mrs. John Calcara of Kanopolis announced the marriage of their daughter, Vitina, to Dr. George Davis of Kanopolis at Olathe, Kansas, on Monday, May 12, 1941. The marriage was announced Saturday by the bride’s parents.

As a courtesy to Miss Agnes Hodgden whose marriage will occur in the near future, a group of her friends entertained at a dinner at the Brookville hotel Wednesday evening at six-thirty o’clock.

September 17, 1981

Ellsworth’s newest physician, Dr. Ronald Whitmer, is a doctor of osteopathic medicine. Whitmer, who received his degree from the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine, will begin his practice October 1.

Work by Brown and Brown Construction, Salina, is almost complete at the Ellsworth Edgar B. Krizek Memorial Park.

Sharla Soukup, a freshman a Ellsworth High School, was named reserve champion Saturday night, September 12. Soukup’s category was Clothing Carousel and she was awarded a silver platter as reserve champion.

For those of you who don’t remember (and that may be about everyone), the last time Ellsworth won a home football game was October 21, 1976 when the Bearcats downed Lincoln 30-24 at Homecoming.

September 18, 1986

The Ellsworth County Historical Society will have an open house to fete its 25th anniversary and realistically celebrate the 125th year of Kansas’ existence.

The event will be Saturday, September 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ellsworth Museum grounds.

A painting by Ellsworth artist, Charles B. Rogers, has mysteriously disappeared from the governor’s mansion in Topeka, leaving the artist confused and not just a little angry.

The painting, a 16-inch by 20-inch Kansas autumn landscape, was discovered missing from Cedar Crest during an inventory in the summer, according to Alden K. Shields, secretary of administration.

Ten Ellsworth County 4-H’ers came home from the Kansas State Fair with the highest awards possible for their projects. Thousands of hopeful 4-H’ers make the annual trek to the fair to have their projects judged. While several Ellsworth County youths came home with awards, just 10 — Teresa Patry, Pam Brokes, Tony Brokes, Sherry Truhlar, Scott Truhlar, Sarah Kratzer, Valerie Campbell, Wayne Scritchfield, Marisa Ericson and Joe Pilsel — brought back purple ribbons.

Quivira Heights rolled up nearly 400 yards of offense Friday en route to a 54-12 pasting of Lucas-Luray in the first football game of the 1986 season.

Mr. and Mrs. Bert Rozelle, Ellsworth will observe their golden wedding anniversary with an open house Sunday, September 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Third and Douglas, Ellsworth.

September 19, 1991

State Livestock Judging Team results — The Ellsworth county 4-H Livestock Judging Team participated in the State 4-H/FFA Livestock Judging Contest on Sunday, Sept. 8. The contest was held at the state fair in Hutchinson.

The team judged eight classes of livestock including: two classes of steers, two classes of heifers, one breeding sheep and swine and one market lamb and barrow class. Oral reasons were given on four of these classes. The team placed 59th out 70 teams.

The team members and their respective scores are as follows: Allan Brokes, 461; Scott Bohl, 430; Clayton Huseman, 413; and Eric Bohl, 404.
