In the April 21 edition of the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter, we published a cartoon that prompted an outcry from Wilson residents and several e-mails. The subject of the editorial cartoon was the decision earlier this month by the Central Plains School District to consolidate grades 7-12 at Claflin, leaving Wilson with only elementary grades.
Here is the letter I sent to those who objected to the cartoon:
Thank you for your comments. We appreciate it when readers come to us directly with concerns.
My father was involved in a situation similar to the one Wilson finds itself in so I am aware of the many emotions the board’s decision unleashed.
This is a major story the paper has a responsibility to cover. Stories about the school have been on Page 1 for two weeks in a row. Our goal is to keep everyone informed in a timely, accurate and fair manner.
The editorial page offers a bit more freedom; however, the Independent-Reporter — under any leadership — would never make fun of a community fighting to keep its school. The purpose of the cartoon was to offer in drawing an overall view of the situation. The author is not someone who seeks to create controversy or is unkind. He was simply putting illustration to words.
I hope this helps. If you have more questions, my door is always open or my cell phone number is (785) 472-7339.
