Thank you, first responders

On May 1 of last year I had a catastrophic accident which crushed one of my legs below the knee pinning me under a heavy piece of equipment. The Ellsworth Fire and Rescue arrived in a very short time. Their expertise freed me from the crushing weight. This involved quick thinking, action and skill. I know that these volunteers are extremely dedicated and spend many, many hours training. The Ellsworth County ambulance was ready with tourniquets IV access and other life-saving interventions. I was a volunteer EMT for 15 years and realize the challenges in establishing an IV when there are no veins due to blood loss, Both surgeons that took over my care at Salina Regional Health Center attribute my surviving to the care I received from Ellsworth First Responders. From a most grateful survivor — thank you! Alan Byerley Ellsworth

Board continues to serve education

To the Editor: The school finance plan passing is certainly good news! The USD 112 School Board and President Michelle Brokes overcame problems and kept our buildings open, good job! After attending several meetings it seemed that building closings and staff cuts might occur, thankfully the board solved problems and kept them open. Now the suggestion of a new sprinkler system and well seem extravagant and out sync when we were just facing buildings being closed and cuts in employees. Are there other things the schools are more in need of like escape windows, security systems and retaining employees? This board has proven itself in the past and will continue to serve education.
