National Poppy Day is May 28

“In Flander’s Field Poppies Grow” May 28 is National Poppy Day. Many people do not know why The American Legion Auxillary hands out poppies. It traces back to 1918 in memory of the lives lost in World War I. After the battles were fought in the war, the red poppy flourished in France and Belgium where battlefields became burial grounds. The red flowers suddenly bloomed among the graves of fallen service members.

Surviving soldiers came to see the poppy as a symbol of their sacrifice.

We still want to pay tribute to all who served in our military and especially those who fought and died for our freedom. That is why Saturday, May 29, the American Legion Auxillary and their helpers will put out poppy cans and distribute poppies around town in exchange for donations in honor of our fallen service members and US Veterans. All donations go directly to help veterans.

Thank you,

Jessie Kralik, Chaplain

Protect Title 9 from unfair competition

Dear Editor

What is wrong with the lawmakers of Kansas?

First, the governor mandates a law which allows a male who thinks he is a female to compete in athletic events with the female athletes.

Then the Kansas legislature voted to overturn the law and the Governor vetoed it, but the Kansas legislature failed to override her veto.

Imagine a seven-foot male in a basketball game with a 5-foot female. Or, a 250-pound male discus thrower throwing against a 130-pound female thrower.

Remember Title Nine which allowed females to compete? This trans-gender ‘thing’ will make shambles of that law. Even Ms. Jenner said the law is unfair.
