This week’s issues range from infrastructure to redistricting

By

Trump over Kansas

Now we know that both of our United States senators are “Trump lackeys”.

We have known that about Sen. Marshall since his Jan. 6 vote refusing to confirm Joe Biden as president. He recently emphasized his obeisance to Trump by stating that “no one has convinced me that masks really work”.

I had some hope for Sen. Moran, especially when he joined the group of 10 Republican senators working with the Democrats on the bipartisan infrastructure bill. He was doing a great job for Kansas until Trump started blasting the bill and any Republican who supported it. Sen. Moran could not take the “Trump” heat. After working so hard on the bill he voted no despite the fact that 19 other Republican senators voted for the bill.

Shame on both of you for following the lead of the insurrectionist Trump.

Thank you,

Major party rules redistricting

A brief comment about the complaints regarding the gerrymandering of election districts.

Gerrymandering means drawing election districts to favor one political party over another. In the case of Kansas that would be Republicans over Democrats. Complainants want a non-partisan process, which given the Republican political make up of Kansas is highly unlikely.

If Kansans truly want non-partisan redistricting, they will have to elect more Democrats to the state legislature, at least enough to deprive the Republicans of their super majority in both houses of the state legislature, and that might not suffice. Otherwise, complainants are wasting their breath and Republican policy will continue to dominate to the detriment of the state as a whole.

Precedent isn’t always the best way

Dear Editor

After being privileged to serve on several committees and boards over the last 40 years, I conclude that an effective way to kill a project, plan or idea is to say it will set or change the precedent, it will open the flood gates to even more projects, plans and ideas.

If the project, plan or idea is an improvement over the existing precedent, example or standard, why not use it? If it opens the door to more projects, plans or ideas being suggested why not?

It is so easy to say “No, that would change the precedent.”. No closes the door.

It is much harder to say “Yes”, take some ownership, get some skin in the game, follow the project, plan, or idea. Yes opens the door to more projects, plans or ideas.

More projects, plans and ideas could develop a new or different niche for the organization or community.

Southern border needs attention

Democrat President Joe Biden and his ilk (Vice-President Kamala Harris, Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters, et. al.) continue advocating that there should be a mandate requiring Americans to get the COVID-19 vaccine. But the Biden Administration remains silent when it comes to allowing illegal immigrants to cross the United States’ southern border with Mexico without checking to see if they have taken the COVID-19 vaccine.

If you have been paying attention to what is going on at our southern border with Mexico, you have also seen that very few of these illegal immigrants are wearing masks nor practicing social distancing. The next mandate that the Democrats will probably require of Americans is to wear blindfolds so that they (Americans) can’t see the destruction caused by their (Democrat) policies.

Juan Williams said, “The Democrats aren’t talking about ‘open borders’.” Just because the Democrats aren’t “talking about” it doesn’t mean it (open borders) don’t exist. These illegal immigrants are also crowded together. During Trump’s presidency, the liberal Democrat media incorrectly showed pictures of how some of these illegal immigrants were inhumanely confined to cages. It was later proven that these pictures were actually taken during President Obama’s Administration.

The southern border with Mexico, which allowed 212,000 illegal immigrants into the U.S. in July alone, may not be ‘open’, but it sure isn’t ‘closed’ either. These illegal immigrants aren’t just coming from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras either. These “illegals” have come from over 100 countries. Who knows if some COVID variant, in addition to the Delta and Lambda types, or some other contagious disease has been brought into our country since these illegals are not being appropriately checked at our southern border?
