Chickens in Kanopolis?
“Chicken: a bird that is commonly raised by people for its eggs and meat: a hen or a rooster.” (Merriam-Webster.com). As a wife and mother of three children and a citizen of Kanopolis, I attended the April 12 Kanopolis City Council meeting with a question: what would need to be done to be allowed to raise chickens within the city limits?
Being allowed to raise chickens is important as a means of being more self-reliant, particularly with the state of unrest in our world, the rising food cost, and to provide my family with a good source of protein without relying on our nation’s food supply chain.
Here are the highlights of the proposed Chicken Ordinance in Kanopolis:
• No roosters.
• Limited number of hens per residence.
• Chickens must be kept in a pen or chicken house.
• Free range not allowed.
• Annual city permit required.
• Neighbors within 50 feet radius of the chicken pen must sign off on resident’s application. Kanopolis city residents, please watch your upcom
Kanopolis city residents, please watch your upcoming city bill for a survey regarding the proposed chicken ordinance. Please kindly complete and return it to the city office by June 14. Again, this is a matter of providing for our family’s welfare. This is my duty as a wife and mother. If it were anything less, I would not be taking my time to promote the matter. Thank you for your time and consideration.
In God’s will is our Peace,
