Bullying is not ignored
In last week’s issue of the Indy Mr. Michael Hunt, candidate for Ellsworth City Council, responded to the following question: “What do you think are major issues facing your city or school district and how would you address those issues?” In responding, he attacked USD 327 administration, faculty and staff as remiss in addressing bullying and harassment in our schools.
Having some experience with USD 327 administration, faculty, and staff, I cannot let his comments go without rebuttal. In a school setting, one may fairly assume that some bullying and harassment occurs. To claim that our school officials do not make every effort to deal responsibly and fairly with those issues is a gross misrepresentation of fact.
Over the past eight years, I have had the opportunity to substitute in EJSHS classrooms. I have seen no bullying let alone neglect of bullying by school officials. What I have seen is some of the best student behavior that I have ever witnessed since my contact with USD 327 began 45 years ago. I have seen students treat each other, teachers, and substitute teachers with courtesy and respect. If USD 327 school officials were of the sort described by Mr. Hunt, I am certain that my observations would have been much different, and I would not be writing this rebuttal.
If any parent believes that their son or daughter suffers bullying or harassment in our schools, I urge them to contact the appropriate school official regarding their concern. I am confident that their concerns will be addressed in a courteous, respectful, and professional manner.
