Resolutions or not?
Are you a New Year’s resolution person or not?
Some people live for them. Others loathe them.
I can’t really make heads or tails of it.
Part of me thinks, “I can make any new change at any time. Why do I need a new YEAR to implement change or improvement?”
I suppose in some small way, I eschew them because they don’t seem to stick.
The Pew Research Center published an article in January 2024, affirming that resolutions don’t always last.
Interestingly, I’m not alone in my less-than-enthusiastic approach to New Year’s resolutions. Pew reported 56 percent of those polled said they did not make a resolution because they do not like making resolutions.
I can buy into that.
What I also buy into is a good list.
Seriously, is there anything more refreshing than writing a to-do list? My favorite part is crossing items OFF of said to-do list.
I confess: I’ve been known to write items such as “water plants” on my list, simply so I can check them off.
Seriously.
While I’m not inclined to make resolutions for 2025, I would definitely add some items to my to-do list.
Here goes:
• Do not wait until the very last minute to select/submit contest entries for the Kansas Press Association.
I think the reality is that most journalists I know thrive on a deadline. Sometimes I need it to push me across the finish line. But seriously, one of my biggest weaknesses is dragging my feet when selecting contest entries.
I confess, I’ve already started on this one. Earlier this year, I went through about half of the year’s newspapers, selecting items to consider for entry.
I’m writing this column far in advance of our Christmas break, and I’m hoping I can find some time to knock this out.
• Visit my sister, now that she’s in the same geographic region as I am.
My sister is a fascinating human. She, her husband and three children spent more than three years as a full-time RV family.
While she still hits the road, I do need to get on her schedule for a trip for my son and I to see her and have some cousin time.
• Take our son on an adventure — stay overnight in The Santa Fe Boxcar near Hutchinson.
Seriously, have you guys seen this thing? It’s “The Boxcar Children” meets an episode of “Tiny House Nation.”
While I don’t see a tiny house residence in my future, it could be fun to say we did it once.
Bonus points: my son’s other cousins live in the area, so we also can have fun cousin time for this outing.
• Donate that extra car! Confession: we have a vehicle that no longer runs. In the past, I’ve donated vehicles to charities. It is my intention to donate this one to the Red Cross.
While I made the initial phone call months ago, my follow-through was less than impressive, and we still have that dang car sitting in our driveway.
