STOP SIGN SAFETY
An ounce of prevention could save lives of motorists
The March 22 accident at the Old Highway 40 and Kansas Highway 156 intersection should serve as a wake-up call to us all.
We would like to take this opportunity to encourage our local government leaders to work with appropriate road or state departments to see what steps we can take to make these intersections safer for all motorists.
Yes, there is a sign on Old 40 indicating that the crossing traffic doesn’t stop, but could there be more?
Would installing flashing red lights atop the stop sign be possible? Could it be possible to add rumble strips or another appropriate device to alert drivers with another sensory experience that they need to take a moment and pay extra attention at the upcoming intersection?
The same question applies to the Kansas 14 and Highway 156 intersection. Could there be additional measures?
Can we do more to help ensure the safety of motorists to prevent any further loss of life at these intersections?
We strongly encourage local government officials to actively seek preventative options to help keep all of our motorists safe.
