One of the best parts of working at a small weekly newspaper in rural Kansas is observing and being part of a group of citizens who appreciate their community and are dedicated to making it better.

Over the years, Ellsworth has been fortunate to have numerous leaders in that category.

We lost one this past week with the resignation of Alan Stefek as mayor.

“Effective immediately, I am resigning as mayor of the City of Ellsworth,” Stefek wrote in a letter dated Monday, Nov. 11. “Due to health concerns, I am not able to continue in the position. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the community I love and appreciate the support of the city staff and council.”

Stefek’s time at Ellsworth City Hall dates back to before he assumed the title of mayor. He served as city council president for many years. In fact, Stefek was a member of the council when Sharon Montague and I started the Ellsworth County Independent in 1999. Bob Homolka was mayor then. Stefek’s fingerprints are on many accomplishments the town has experienced in recent years.

In 2018, Stefek’s service to Ellsworth was recognized by organizers of the town’s annual Cowtown Festival with his selection as grand marshal of the Saturday morning parade. It was a well deserved honor.
