Ellsworth beat the Minneapolis Lions 3-2 on the softball field April 14.

The Cats engaged in a battle as they had to fight until the final inning, making sure to have clean defense and working to take control in the batter’s box. The team was able to get on base and move each other around to score.

Junior Makenna Haas hit an inthe- park homerun in the third inning.

After scoring 2 more points in the fifth inning, the Bearcats sealed the victory.

While this game should have been a double header, weather cut the second game short. The score was tied 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning when lightning struck and the players were called off the field. The goal was to take a 30-minute delay and get back on the field, but after enough lightning strikes, the game was called off.

The rescheduled game is at 4:30 p.m. today.

Bearcats vs. the Ellinwood Eagles The Bearcat softball team went 2-0 against the Ellinwood Eagles April 10. The first game ended 24-0 and the second 23-4, both by run rule.

The Bearcats took control from the first pitch. Scoring 12 points in just the first inning, they were able to bat around the lineup.

Because the earliest possible run rule in the game is a 15-point lead in the third inning and the Eagles had to bat last, the Bearcats continued to run the score. They scored 8 points in the second inning and 4 in the third.

Controlling the game from the pitcher’s mound, junior Emma Moore and sophomore Lizzy Kempke together allowed only one Eagle hit the entire first game, while the Bearcats had 16.

The game ended 24-0 and the Bearcats kept it going in the second game.

Although their defense allowed the Eagles 3 runs in the first inning, the team did not let that get them down. Their bats stayed hot, scoring 4 runs in the first inning. The next two innings only got better.

In the second inning, the Bearcats scored 15 points while only allowing the Eagles 1. In the third and final inning, the Bearcats scored 4 points, not allowing Ellinwood any runs.

The final score was 23-4. The softball team will play again April 21 at Spearville.
