Bearcat softball has winning streak

In a five-game week, the Bearcat softball team took home four victories. They started the week playing Sacred Heart April 18, beating the Knights 19-4 in both games.

They finished the Minneapolis game that had been postponed April 14 due to lightning, and lost 8-7.

The team ended the week playing Spearville on April 21. They won 17-3 in the first game and 12-5 in the second.

Ellsworth vs. Sacred Heart From the beginning of the game against Sacred Heart, the team took control. In the first inning, they scored 2 points while keeping the Knights from scoring.

Getting their job done on defense allowed the Bearcats to work on their bats. Hitting has been the team’s biggest setback, and this week was a step toward excelling in the batter’s box.

Junior Paityn Tenbrink hit an out-of-the-park homerun, adding to an already increasing score.

By the end of the third inning, the score was 15-4. Because the run rule after three innings requires a 15-point lead, they went into a fourth inning. If the Cats could score 4 more points without allowing the Knights to score, the Bearcats would win the game.

After hitting numerous base hits, the team was able to score the needed 4 points and they run ruled the Knights with a score of 19-4.

Rallying from the win in the previous game, the Bearcats were able to take the next victory in three innings.

Making sure to play clean defense and then work hard when batting, the Bearcats ended the first inning 18-0.

The team scored 1 more point and the Knights scored 4. The game ended by run rule, 19-4.

Ellsworth vs. Minneapolis The team made the trip back to Minneapolis April 20 to finish the game that a storm cut short the previous Friday.

The game picked up with the Lions up to bat in the bottom of the fifth inning with the score tied 6-6. There were already two outs, and the Bearcats quickly got the third.

Both teams played clean defense and held the other to no points in the sixth inning.

In the seventh, senior Greta Klein stole home to take the lead, making the score 7-6. This was all the Bearcats scored in the seventh inning, and since the Lions were the home team, they had the final at bat.

The Lions were able to hit a base hit and shortly after, Shelby Davidson was up to bat. Junior Emma Moore pitched her a strike that Davidson took to the fence. She hit a walk-off out of the park homerun to score 2 points and win the game.

The Bearcats lost by a final score of 8-7.

Ellsworth vs. Spearville

To end the week, the softball team made the two-hour trip to Spearville.

Though the game started off rocky, the Bearcats were determined to take home a victory after making the drive.

The first inning ended 6-2 with the Lancers leading. Though Spearville was up after the first inning, the Bearcats won every other inning.

Slowly working their way to catch up to the Lancers, the Bearcats kept their bats going, however, by the end of the seventh inning, the score was tied 13-13.

Going into three extra innings, the teams battled until the end. Neither team scored in the eighth or ninth innings, but the Cats scored 4 in the 10th. They then held Spearville on defense and sealed the victory.

In the second game, the Bearcats kept their energy and bats alive. They were able to hit all game. They also played much cleaner on defense too, and won the game 12-5.

The team will play at Southeast of Saline May 2 at 3:30 p.m.
