Boys’ wrestling places second at Halstead
HALSTEAD — The Ellsworth boys’ wrestling team competed in the Halstead Invitational Jan. 17, placing second out of 21 teams. The team once again had a good turnout, with nine wrestlers placing in the top six of their weight class, including three wrestlers claiming the top spot in their bracket.
Winning the championship in their brackets were seniors Micah Galvan and Keegan Urbanek and sophomore Bo Kyler.
Getting a first round bye, Galvan won the 215lb. division by going undefeated in his first three matches, defeating Ryan Weller of Southeast of Saline, Ramon Villanueava of Lyons and Noah Covey of Bluestem.
Urbanek, also getting a first round bye, won the 190-lb. bracket by defeating Fernando Paul of Herington, Sadler DeFrain of Haven and Logan Overton of Halstead.
Kyler, winning the 175lb. bracket, went 4-0 on the day by defeating Jaxson Caywood of Bluestem, Landen Potts of Hillsboro, Austin Andersen of Chase County and Riley Queen of Halstead.
Earning second place in their respective weight classes were junior Ishmael De La Cruz and sophomores Rhett Bohl and Walter Hulse.
De La Cruz, taking second in the 113-lb. weight class, opened with a first round bye, then defeated Aidan Johnson of Herington, JayVion Arrington of Wichita Heights and Max Gordon of Southeast of Saline, before losing to Greysen Lee of Lyons.
Bohl claimed his runner- up spot in the 132-lb. division by defeating Nate Raya of Wichita Heights, Ethan Urbanek of Herington and Gauge Fritz of Southeast of Saline, before losing to Tanner Loughrie of Haven.
Hulse, having a first round bye, placed second in the 126-lb. division by defeating Ryder Armstrong of Remington and Troy Monts of Minneapolis, before losing to Covell Nichols of Wichita Heights.
Three Bearcat wrestlers placed fourth through sixth in the tournament, with those wrestlers being seniors Jackson Minear and Hunter Kinsley and freshman Carson Tyrell. Minear placed fourth in the 144-lb. bracket, going 3-2 on the day, while Tyrell placed fifth in the 106-lb. division. Kinsley placed sixth in the 120-lb. bracket, going 2-3 on the day.
The team hosts Southeast of Saline Jan. 22 for Senior Night, then travels to Hays Jan. 23-24.
