Dragon basketball teams start year strong

WILSON — The Wilson Dragon boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams traveled to Natoma Jan. 3 to take on the Tigers. Both Dragon teams were victorious.

To start their game, the Lady Dragons put on a press to force turnovers and get an early lead. At the end of the first quarter, the Dragons were on top 13-5. Although the Dragons had the lead, the Lady Tigers heated up in the second quarter to close the half with a score of 19-18, still favoring the Dragons.

To start the third quarter, the Dragons came out fast, scoring five points in just the first 30 seconds.

Going into the fourth quarter, the score was 38-22.

When the clock hit zero, the score was 50-37 to improve the Dragons to 6-0.

This win was a team effort with all eight members contributing to the win. Leading the stat-line was sophomore Serenity Steinike with 16 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds. Following her was junior Anna Thielen, putting up 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals.

Senior Cara Criswell added 11 points and 2 rebounds to the effort. Contributing 4 points and 2 rebounds was junior Skylar Cullens.

Sophomores Hallie Thielen and Abby Dlabal both added 2 points. Sophomore Tyra Meyer had a rebound and sophomore Alivia Koch took another charge.

After the girls’ game, the Dragon boys’ team blew out the Tigers 60-20, ending the game with a running clock.

Wilson vs. Southern Cloud

On Jan. 6, the Dragons hosted the Southern Cloud Warriors. Once again both Dragon teams finished with wins.

Starting the night, the girls came out again with their press to shut out the Warriors in the first quarter with a score of 20-0.

Going into the second quarter, the Dragons continued to out-score the Warriors to make the score 32-6 going into halftime.

The third quarter was uneventful, with only 2 points put up by each team to make the score 34-8.

The fourth quarter ended with a running clock with the final score 45-15.

This win improves the girls’ to 7-0 this season.

All teammates made an effort for this win, again starting with junior Anna Thielen with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. She was followed by senior Cara Criswell adding 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals.

Sophomores Tyra Meyer added 9 points and 4 rebounds as well as Serenity Steinike with 7 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds. Sophomore Abby Dlabal added 2 points and 2 rebounds, while sophomore Alivia Koch added 2 points with 3 rebounds.

Junior Skylar Cullens contributed 3 rebounds and sophomore Hallie Thielen had 2 rebounds.

To finish the night, the boys’ team got another win after losing to the Warriors in December. The final score for the game was 62-44.

This improves the team to 5-2 on the season, giving the Dragons a 4-game winning streak.

The win was a team effort. Leading the scoring was sophomore Connor Charvat with 18, followed by senior Memphis Eberhart with 15, sophomore Cade Brokes with 9, senior Noah Crawford with 8, freshmen Sam Thielen with 7 and Braden Nelson with 4. Junior Taegan Thrasher contributed 1 point.

The boys and girls basketball teams faced the Chase Kats on Tuesday, Jan. 10.
