Ellsworth earns top spot in tennis invite
The Lady ‘Cats dominated the Ellsworth Girls’ Varsity Invitational Tuesday, Sept. 1, in Ellsworth by walking away with a 1st place finish in overall points with 52.
Central Plains finished in fourth place with 34 points.
For Ellsworth, Calli Sheridan rolled through the first two rounds of the No. 2 singles bracket before an 8-6 win to secure 1st place points for the Lady ‘Cats. Sheridan won her first match against Anilec Rios of Lyons 8-3. Sheridan swept Isabelle Shank of Trinity 8-0 in the following round before advancing to the championship match against Karee Adam of Smoky Valley. Adam played Sheridan close before falling 8-6.
Nicole Haase and Maggie Windholz beat Smoky Valley 8-3 in No. 2 doubles to advance to the championship match, where they went on to win their bracket with an 8-2 win over Central Plains.
Cassie Most finished 5th in No. 1 singles. She lost her first match 8-2 to Whittney Hammeke of Ellinwood. She followed up with an 8-4 win over Ashlyn Armstrong of Central Plains before falling to eventual 3rd place winner, Hayley Hughes of Trinity. Most finished her singles bracket with an 8-6 win over Tessa Miller from Lyons to lock in 5th place.
Jaycee Cunningham and Steph Soukup finished 3rd in the No. 1 doubles bracket for Ellsworth. Cunningham and Soukup swept Lyons 8-0 to advance to the second round where they faced Smoky Valley, who would eventually win the bracket. Ellsworth hung tough with Smoky Valley, taking them to the brink with the match going 8-7 (5). In the championship round of the consolation bracket, the Bearcats took down Lyons 8-3 to secure 3rd place.
For Central Plains, the No. 1 doubles team of Brynna Hammeke and Kyla Metro placed 2nd in front of Ellsworth.
The Oilers’ No. 2 doubles team of Jennah Jeffrey and Lauren Oeser also placed second, this time behind the Lady ‘Cats.
