Ellsworth girls trounce Trojans

BELOIT — The Ellsworth Bearcat girls’ basketball team played the Beloit Trojans Dec. 20 and won 48-44.
The game started on an extremely productive foot. The Cats started by establishing a lead over the Trojans, who were also scoring. The Cats still managed to keep a competitive edge, and the first quarter ended 14-9, Ellsworth.
Both teams kept roughly the same pace they had set for the second quarter. The Trojans scored the same number of points they did in the first quarter, and the Cats scored one point less. Despite that, Ellsworth still expanded their lead. The second quarter ended 27-18, with the Cats establishing a good pace for the rest of the game.
The third quarter was the worst for the Cats in the entire game. The Trojans narrowed the deficit to 8 points. The Trojans also scored the exact same amount of points for the third time in a row. Their extreme consistency would only help them to get even further behind. The third quarter ended 35-27, Ellsworth.
The Trojans broke the pattern in the fourth quarter and scored the most points for the game. Their wake-up call made them shoot past their past mediocre performance, and place them right in front of victory. Their comeback came too little too late, though. Their impressive victory lap stopped 5 points shy of actually coming to fruition. The Cats had laid too strong of a foundation.
The high scorer for the Bearcats was junior Lainey Peschka, who scored 23 points over the course of the game.
The girls’ record is 3-2. The team plays the Larned Indians Jan. 7 at home.
