Ellsworth golf competes well May 4 at home

The Ellsworth varsity golf team hosted a meet May 4.

Eight schools participated with 41 golfers. Four Ellsworth athletes competed — juniors Sam Karst and Avery Holecek, senior Izaac Vasquez and sophomore Billy Duncan, coached by Head Coach Darin Holecek.

On Friday, Karst was the top Bearcat golfer with his personal record of 104 and placing 22nd.

“I went out for golf because I thought it would be fun,” he said.“My grandpa got me into golf, so I wanted to go out for it all through high school.”

Junior Avery Holecek followed in second with an overall score of 113. She was satisfied and proud of her Friday performance.

“I played fairly well at the home varsity meet,” she said.“My teammates also played well and I was proud of our performances.”

Holecek placed 28th.

Izaac Vasquez took 39th with a 132 and Billy Duncan placed 40th with a 134.

It is Darin Holecek’s first year coaching golf, and by taking the job, he’s had the opportunity for new experiences. He cited“getting to know the personality of the team members” as one of those experiences, and specifically this week,“learning the process of setting up and hosting home tournaments.”

As a coach, Holecek has been granted the chance to develop a relationship with his players. He said his favorite part of coaching so far has been being around the student athletes and getting to know them personally.

The team also competed at the league meet in Salina on May 2, and are preparing for regionals on May 15 at Russell.
