Ellsworth loses to Sacred Heart
Due to winter weather the Jan. 17 game against Sacred Heart was rescheduled and played Monday, Feb. 3, at Ellsworth. The girls’ game ended 51-43 with Sacred Heart ahead.
The first quarter started out badly for the Lady Bearcats. They only put 6 points on the board, leaving the Lady ‘Cats behind by 15 points by the end of the period. Lakyn Tenbrink put half of those points on the board followed by Natalie Rolfs with 2 and Makenzie Stroede with 1.
Getting back in the groove during the second quarter, Jaide Talbott contributed 6 points followed by Tenbrink with 5, Brenna Pruitt with a 3-pointer and Natalie Rolfs, Greta Klien and Nicole Haase, each with 2 points.
This gave the Bearcat’s 20 points on the board leaving them behind only by 7 points at half. Eight fouls were called in the first half leaving the score 33-26.
However, Ellsworth persevered and added 12 more points during the third quarter. Tenbrink again was the high scorer with 4, followed by Stroede and Pruitt, each with 3, and Haase with 2. No time outs were called. Ellsworth was down by only 2 points at the end of the third quarter, 40-38.
Stroede, Rolfs, and Talbott put 5 points collectively on the board with Rolfs being the high scorer for the quarter with 3 points. The Lady ‘Cats had 8 fouls called on them.
Schulte-Haxton lead ‘Cats
The boys also struggled to keep up with Sacred Heart, ending the game with a loss, 58-39. Braden Schulte and Avery Haxton were the only two ‘Cats to put points on the board in the first quarter. Haxton managed a 3- pointer and a basket for 5 points and Schulte made one shot for 2 points, leaving a 17-7 score in favor of Sacred Heart.
Haxton and Shulte continued to be a two-man show for the team however it was only with 2 points from each of them. A time out was called with 2:19 remaining. The score at half was 32-11.
The second half of the game brought 28 more points to the board. During the third quarter Haxton and Schulte were joined by Trey Anderson and Hayden Rogers, each with one basket. One time out was called, leaving the score at the end of the third period 41-22 in favor of Sacred Heart.
Sacred Heart and the Bearcats both scored 17 points in the final period. Shulte again put 8 points up. John Kyler joined in with 5 more points followed by Haxton and Luke Sharp with 2 points.
Ten fouls were called on the boys in the last half of the game.
Ellsworth played Russell Tuesday at Russell.
