Ellsworth wrestlers compete at Bob Kuhn Classic at Hays
Ellsworth wrestlers placed 17th out of 27 teams this past weekend during the Bob Kuhn Classic Invitation Tournament at Hays High School. The boys had a total of eight wins in their 17 matches Friday and Saturday.
Bearcat senior Tyler Walford, weighing in at 285 pounds, won two of his three matches, giving him a 2nd place. Winning over Jonah Scott of McPherson by fall and Parker Opat of Trego, Walford’s loss was to Austin Perez of Ulysses by fall in the finals.
Two hundred and twenty pound senior Brendan Tripp placed 6th with two wins and three loses. Tripp won over Tsaiah Barrett of Garden City and Cole Gilliand of Hoisington, 12-10. Tripp lost to Dillion Dunn of Trego by tech fall, 0-15.
Junior Tyler Romero also placed 6th with three wins and three loses. Romero won over Ellis, Garden City, and St. Francis boys. Romero lost to Hunter Huber, 3-9.
Teagon Nienke, a Bearcat junior, did not place during the tournament. He had a win over Gabe Rosensteil of Goddard Eisenhower 6-2. Nienke lost by fall to Rocco Russo of Spring Hill and Dalton Weber of Pratt.
The Bearcats next meet is at 6:30 p.m. today (Thursday, Jan.
30) against Beloit at Ellsworth. Seniors will be recognized.
Great Bend took first place in the tournament with 187.5 points.
