Five wrestlers place first individually

Boys’ team places fourth, girls’ team places second at league

MINNEAPOLIS — The Ellsworth boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams competed at the NCAA League meet Feb. 6 at Minneapolis. The boys placed fourth out of six teams with 115 points while the girls placed second out of six teams with 113.5 points.

For the boys, the most successful wrestlers were juniors Keegan Urbanek and Micah Galvan and senior Will Donley. For the girls, the most successful wrestlers were sophomores Brooklyn Webb and Sophie Homolka and senior Danica Hicks.

Urbanek wrestled in the 190-lb. weight bracket. His first match was against Beloit, who he beat 5-0. He then beat Minneapolis with a takedown, Belleville-Republic County 5-0 and finally Gypsum-Southeast of Saline 7-0.

He placed first in the bracket and earned 22 points for the team.

Galvan wrestled in the 175-lb. weight bracket. He started by beating Gypsum-SES 6-1. He then beat Beloit 3-0. He annihilated Lyons 16-2. Finally, he faced Belleville-RC and won 4-3. He placed first in the bracket and earned 22 points for the team.

Donley wrestled in the 138-lb. weight bracket. He won against Lyons 10-0, Gypsum-SES 6-0 and Beloit 3-0.

He obliterated Belleville-RC 13-0 and finally beat Minneapolis 4-0. He earned first in the bracket and gained 21.5 points for the team.

Next action for the team will be Feb. 21-22 at the regional tournament at Hoisington.

On to the girls’ team, Webb wrestled in the 125-lb. weight bracket.

She did not compete in the first two rounds. In the third round, she wrestled against Lyons and won with a takedown. She then faced Gypsum-SES and again won with a takedown.

Finally, she faced Beloit and won 5-0. She placed first in the bracket and earned 20 points for the team.

Homolka wrestled in the 145-lb. weight bracket. She did not wrestle in the first two rounds. In the third round she won against Beloit with a takedown.

She then defeated Belleville-Republic County 3-2. She placed first in the bracket and earned 18 points for the team Finally, Hicks wrestled in the 115-lb. weight bracket. She won her first round against Gypsum-SES with a takedown. In round two, she annihilated Lyons 16-0. She then lost to Minneapolis with a takedown in the third round. She didn’t compete in the fourth round. In the final round, Beloit suffered an injury. Hicks placed second in the bracket and earned 15.5 for the team.

The team will compete at the regional tournament at Russell Feb. 14-15.
