Lady Bearcats show league potential

The Ellsworth Lady Bearcats have the potential to finish in the top level of North Central Activities Association teams this season.

That’s the expectation of Ken Cravens, who has served as the Lady ‘Cats head coach for 18 years.

“We will have some very tough decisions to make as far as personnel, starting lineups, etc.,” Cravens said.“Some of the girls are very interchangeable but also bring their own unique strengths to the floor. That should make for some very competitive practices as there will be some excellent battles for playing time at certain spots.”

Ellsworth finished the 2018-19 season with an overall record of 5-16. The team was 3-9 in league, finishing out the season with a loss in the first round of sub-state.

Returning starters are seniors Savannah Hellebust, Lakyn Tenbrink and Jaide Talbott.

Seniors Brenna Pruitt and Makenzie Stroede also are in the lineup.

Junior players are Elizabeth Hipp, Shaylee Leiker and Maggie Windholz. Nicole Haase, a 5’9” forward, is a sophomore.

New players include Natalie Rolfs, a 5’2” sophomore guard; and Greta Klein, a 5’9” freshman forward.

Kevin Haxton is the assistant coach.

Cravens said the key will be to develop chemistry and rotations as the team enters the season.

“We are excited to have some players back from key injuries last year,” he said. “We will have to replace three senior leaders from last season. We will need to be a more balanced scoring team this season. The girls will have to step up their games collectively to compete in the league, and with a tough nonleague schedule this year.

“The loaded non-league schedule should prepare us well for our post-season.”

As for league teams, Cravens expects Beloit to be outstanding.

“They return a lot of scoring and rebounding from last year’s team,” he said.

Republic County and Salina’s Sacred Heart also provide challenges for the Lady ‘Cats.

Ellsworth is at home Friday against Lyons.
