Oilers end 54-game winning streak
Girls roll to 112th consecutive win
Central Plains senior Emily Ryan entered Friday’s season-opener in Hoisington as the No. 9 all-time leading scorer in Kansas. The future Iowa State Cyclone opened her final prep season with 44 points in less than three quarters of action. The Lady Oilers rolled to their 112th-consecutive win in a 95-17 rout of the Lady Cardinals.
“It was a good start,” said Lady Oiler coach Pat Stiles.“The girls just shared the ball. Emily had some really good looks early but she’s just so unselfish and shared the ball with her teammates. They look for her. It’s the perfect storm when they share the ball.”
Senior Delaney Rugan put the Lady Oilers on the board just 17 seconds into the contest, then her offensive rebound and assist led to Ryan’s first points of the season 23 seconds later. The rout was officially on.
Ryan took a steal the distance, then senior Addison Crites converted a Ryan miss for a quick 8-0 lead less than two minutes in. Crites was big on the glass and Ryan continued to fire in points as the Lady Oilers scored the first 21 points of the game. Ryan went on to score 18 points in the first eight minutes of action as Central Plains opened up a 30-4 lead.
Hoisington turned the ball over 10 times in the first four minutes of the season, but Stiles still found room for improvement from his squad.
“There are some things defensively we can do better,” he said. “Just little things like jumping to the ball and boxing out. We’ll just keep working on those things. But it was a good start defensively and offensively.” Lady Cardinal junior Keeley Wolf proved to be the lone threat for Hoisington throughout most of the night. She scored the first seven Hoisington points in a 30-7 score. Then Lady Oiler sophomore Kassidy Nixon took over with back-to-back threes and eightstraight points to extend the gap to 45-8. Ryan finished with 29 at the half as Central Plains took a 55-8 lead into the half.
Things never got easier for Hoisington in the second half. Ryan scored early on, then Rachel Lamatsch added a 3-pointer for her first points of the season and a 61-8 score. A Lamatsch steal turned into Ryan points and a 65-8 lead midway through the frame. Ryan swished a trey with 1:51 to play in the third to surpass the 40-point mark. She exited the game shortly after that with her game-high 44 points to go along with eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Late in the game, Stiles turned to a capable bench to finish off the job. With a running clock, the Lady Oilers still piled on 11 points in the fourth quarter. Freshman Brynna Hammeke was big in the fourth with five of her nine points.“We have some really good seniors but we have some good young kids, too,” said Stiles.
Wolf scored 14 of Hoisington’s 17 points in the game. Nixon and Crites each scored 13 points for Central Plains, and Crites just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Rugan finished with seven points, Zoe Potter scored four points, Lamatsch finished with three points and five assists, and Lexi Oeser added the other two points.
