The Lady Oilers took a close loss Tuesday night to Hesston, 36-42. Central Plains fell behind early, trailing 3-9 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Oilers battled back, outscoring the Eagles in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, tying the game going into the 4th.

After a quiet night from Hesston’s Anna Humphreys, who had only 2 points going into the 4th quarter, scored 9 of her 11 points, pushing the Eagles past Central Plains.

Brynna Hammeke led the Oilers in scoring with 14 points but was shut out in the 4th quarter. Hammeke and Lexi Oeser both led the team from beyond the arch with two 3-pointers apiece. Kassidy Nixon added 9 points as the second leading scorer for the Oilers.

Two days after the loss to Hesston, the Central Plains girls rebounded Thursday night with a 34-point win over Ellinwood, 77-43.

“They really came out focused and played really hard,” Coach Pat Stiles said. “We got ahead early, I was really pleased with the way we played.”

Senior Jennah Jeffrey added, “We took Tuesday’s loss pretty hard, but we came back and practiced and got ready for tonight’s game. Everyone played well passing the ball around and making their shots.”

The Lady Oilers buried Ellinwood in the first quarter, outscoring the Eagles 24-6.

Sophomore point guard, Brynna Hammeke had 8 of her game-leading 25 points in the first quarter. Kassidy Nixon added 8 as well in the first quarter, finishing with 14 total points. Lexi Oeser was the second leading scorer for the Lady Oilers with 16 points, leading the team in field goals from beyond the arch with four 3-pointers.

On defense, Central Plains forced 16 turnovers. With the win, the Oilers improve to 11-3 on the season.

Central Plains will host St. John Friday, Feb. 5.
