Oilers second and Bearcats third during tennis meet

The Central Plains High School Varsity Girls Tennis Team took second overall with the Ellsworth High School team coming in third Aug. 30 during the EHS Women’s Invitational Tennis Tournament in Ellsworth.

The EHS junior varsity squad took eighth at the meet.

The Oilers were led by No. 1 Singles player Kyla Metro, who defeated Ellsworth JV player Makenna Haas in the first round. Metro went on to defeat her opponent from Ellinwood in the semi-finals, and she advanced to the finals against Smoky Valley but came up short and took second place.

No. 1 Singles player Calli Sheridan of Ellsworth defeated her opponent from Trinity Catholic in the first round, but lost in the semi-finals to Smoky Valley. Sheridan then defeated opponents from Concordia and Ellinwood to take third place in singles.

After being defeated by Metro in the first round, Haas went on to lose to her opponent from Concordia in the semi-finals. Haas then played Trego Community for seventh place, but came up short and ended the tournament in eighth place.

In No. 2 singles, Oiler Lauren Oeser took first place with a bye in the first round and victories over Smoky Valley and Trinity Catholic to gain the top slot in the tournament.

Sami Couch of Ellsworth placed fourth in No. 2 singles, defeating Trego Community in the first round, and Ellinwood in the second round, but losing to Smoky Valley.

Ellsworth JV’s Caylee Hammel took sixth place in No. 2 Singles, with a win over Trinity Catholic in the first round, followed by a victory over Smoky Valley in the semi-finals. Hammel went on to lose to Smoky Valley and Ellinwood for third place.

In No. 1 Doubles, Ellsworth’s Elena Jundt and Bekah Vague took second, with a victory over Concordia, and also a victory over the Oilers No. 1 Doubles team of Ashlynn Armstrong and Ryann Metro. Ellsworth then lost in the finals to Smoky Valley. Armstrong and Metro then defeated Trego Community and Ellinwood for third place.

Ellsworth’s No. 1 JV Doubles team of Eva Neuman and Emma Salyers took seventh. They were defeated in the first round by Smoky Valley, by Trego Community in the second round but won against Trinity Catholic for seventh place.

In No. 2 Doubles, Ellsworth’s Felis De La Cruz and Inarie Rippert took second with a victory against Concordia, a victory against Ellinwood in the semi-finals but a loss to Smoky Valley in the finals.

The Central Plains team of Elizeia Knapp-Blehm and Grace Lamatsch took third with a victory over Trego Community in the first round, followed by a loss to Smoky Valley in the semi-finals. Central Plains went on to defeat Concordia and Ellinwood for third place.

The Ellsworth JV team of Charlotte Bettenbrock and Cadence Halffhill took seventh, being defeated by Ellinwood in the first round and Concordia in the second round. Ellsworth JV then had a bye for seventh place.
