Bearcat baseball gets easy win in bad weather
MINNEAPOLIS — On April 14, the Ellsworth Bearcat baseball team traveled to Minneapolis, but due to inclement weather, the Cats were only able to play one game.
With a score of 15-1, the Bearcats easily won game one. Junior Cole Webber hit a single to start the Cats’ first inning, which resulted in one run being scored.
As the game carried on, the Bearcats outscored the Lions by 8 runs in the fifth inning to seal the victory. Many players helped the team get off to a strong lead: Junior Wyatt Bohnen and sophomore Dax Leiker both reached first base after getting walked by the pitcher. Junior Layton Leiker hit a double and senior Cade Gwinner, sophomore Gavin Moyer and Webber all hit singles.
The second game ended in the second inning with the Cats up 11-0 due to inclement weather. The rescheduled game is at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
Ellsworth baseball team loses two by single run
ELLINWOOD — The Bearcats had a difficult night April 1 when they traveled to Ellinwood. It was a devastating night for the Cats as they lost both games by a single run.
In the opening game, the Eagles defeated the Cats 11-10. The score was influenced by many players. Lane Rolfs hit a single and Cole Webber hit a double both in the third inning. In the fourth inning, Layton Leiker also hit a single and Webber hit a home run.
Unfortunately, the Cats lost the second game 5-4. Junior Ben Hipp and Webber both lead the team with two hits each.
The Bearcats go back to Minneapolis tomorrow to finish their second game against the Lions at 4 p.m.
Two Bearcats place third in No. 1 and No. 2 singles
The Ellsworth boys’ varsity tennis team did well at the Ellsworth Invitational April 14.
Junior Jacob Togersen placed sixth in No. 1 singles. In No. 2 singles, senior Caleb Romero finished fourth and freshman Seth Kyler finished eighth.
The No. 1 doubles team of seniors Brendan Anderson and Chase Bourbon placed third while senior Anthony Halbgewachs and freshman Guage Weder finished fourth in No. 2 doubles. In No. 2 doubles, senior Rudhra Bhakta and freshman Jacob Maze placed fifth.
Out of eight teams, the team finished in fourth place.
Bearcat tennis places second in singles action
STERLING — The Bearcats performed well again at the Sterling meet April 10.
In No. 1 singles, Jacob Togersen placed second and Caleb Romero finished second in No. 2 singles. No. 1 doubles partners Brendan Anderson and Chase Bourbon finished first.
In No. 2 doubles, sophomore Tyler Conley and Maze placed first while Halbgewachs and Weder finished second also in No. 2 doubles.
The team tied for first place with Pratt. The next action for the Cats will be April 25 at Larned.
Hays is top trap shooter
Twenty-six athletes participated Sunday in the first trap shoot of the season at the Ellsworth County Sportsman’s Club. Each competitor shot two rounds of 25, fighting through wind gusts of up to 39 mph.
Junior Trenton Hays was the top shooter, hitting 43 targets out of 50. Senior Aiden Moyer followed in at a close second with a score of 37/50 and eighth grader Cyrus Grothusen shot 32/50.
“The wind made for a tough shoot, but I’m optimistic about our team’s potential,” Head Coach Scott Thomasson said. “We are a young team and only going to get better.”
The team’s conference includes Beloit, Eudora, Fredonia, Kapaun Mt. Carmel, Labette and Maize.
The next trap competition is April 23 at the gun range.
