Baseball falls to SES

The Bearcat baseball team had a difficult night May 2 as they fell to the Southeast of Saline Trojans 4-3 on the Trojans’ home turf.

The Trojan bats were strong and continued into game two, ending with a 12-2 win for Southeast.

The Bearcats’ next game is regionals at Hoisington next week with the date and time to be determined.

Tennis duo state-bound On May 4 and 5, the boys’ tennis team traveled to Hillsboro to compete in the regional tennis tournament resulting in double partners junior Brendan Anderson and senior Chase Bourbon advancing to state.

The duo got a bye in the first round for being the No. 3 seed in the tournament. They won their first game against Schafer/Cruz of Hillsboro. Moving onto their second game, they beat Baker/Baker of Smoky Valley, advancing them on. They lost their third game against Cennan/Hageman of Hutch Trinity, placing third in the tournament and advancing on to the state tournament in Wichita tomorrow and Saturday.

Senior Caleb Romero and junior Jacob Togersen both played singles and lost in the second round, ending their season.

Double partners junior Tyler Conley and senior Anthony Halbgewachs also concluded their season with a loss in the second round.

Mixed results for softball The Ellsworth softball team beat the Plainville Cardinals 16-1 and 18-7 May 4. They were unable to gain a victory May 2, losing to the Southeast of Saline Trojans 16-1 and 11-1.

The Bearcats took control of their home field as the Cardinals came to town. They were able to have success on defense, but as an even bigger team victory, also made improvements in batting.

After the fourth inning, the Bearcats had a 15-point lead, ending the game by run rule with a score of 16-1.

Between the two games, there were five out-of-the-park homeruns scored. Freshman Alexis Moore hit three for the night and senior Greta Klein and junior Isabelle Lindsley each had one. There were also several doubles and triples.

Earlier in the week the Cats were unable to make anything happen at bat against the Southeast of Saline Trojans and they also had trouble in the field.

By the end of the fourth inning, the Trojans won 16-1 by run rule.

There was not much change in the second game when the Cats had three errors. They lost the second game 11-1.

The team will play next week at regionals at Lyons with the date and time to be determined.

Layton Leiker first in trap The Ellsworth Bearcat trap team competed Sunday with several athletes performing well.

Junior Layton Leiker took first place as the top high school shooter with a score of 41/50, freshman Andrew Hipp followed in a close second with a score of 40/50 and sophomore Dax Leiker placed third with 34/50.

The last competition shoot will be next week with the date to be determined.
