WAKEENEY — The Ellsworth High School boys’ tennis team swept the Class 3-2-1A regional tennis tournament May 2 at WaKeeney.

The Bearcats’ No. 1 singles’ player Joey Oberle and No. 1 Doubles’ team of Caden Whetzel and Dalton Zelenka both won their divisions, earning their way to the state tournament this weekend in Prairie Village.

Oberle, who also was regional singles champion in 2018, defeated Colby’s Drew Starbuck in the championship match, winning 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-1. In doubles play, Whetzel-Zelenka cruised to a win, defeating Larned’s Andrew Bright and Logan DeMond, 6-3,7-5.
