Tennis nabs first place at league meet
LYONS — The Ellsworth girls’ tennis team traveled to Lyons Oct. 6 for the NCAA League Tournament, bringing home first place in team awards.
Ellsworth took first with 28 points, followed by Beloit in second, Lyons in third and Sacred Heart in fourth.
The tournament was a nine-game pro set with a round robin for brackets.
“We sent only one of our varsity players, (junior) Karli Haase, and five of our top six junior varsity players: (sophomore) Addie Harmon, (senior) Eva Neuman, (freshman) Cora Kyler, (freshman) Raegan Williams and (junior) Sophia Homolka to the NCAA League meet and they were able to finish with an 11-1 record as a team,” head coach Eric Anderson said.
Haase took first place in No. 1 singles and Kyler placed first in No. 2 singles. The doubles team of Harmon and Neuman placed first in No. 1 doubles and the team of Homolka and Williams was second in No. 2 doubles.
“Our only loss was at No. 2 doubles in a 7-9 match against Beloit that could have gone either way,” Anderson said. “I am proud of the girls for their efforts and the results.”
Anderson was particularly pleased to see Neuman perform well at league.
“I am extremely happy for the one senior who played today, Eva Neuman. She is one of three seniors on our team who were on our very first junior high team when we started the program five years ago,” Anderson said. “She always comes to practice with a smile on her face, a great attitude and has always listened to what we are trying to teach. She is a great young lady. It was a good way to send Eva out on a high note and end the regular season with a league title.”
The Lady Bearcats will return to Lyons Friday and Saturday to compete in regionals.
