Tennis takes regionals, team heads to state

WAKEENEY — The Ellsworth tennis team competed at regionals Oct. 11., taking first place with 22 points and qualifying every team member for the state tournament.

Hoisington took second place with 10 points. Each seed played best two out of three.

Sophomore Karli Haase annihilated Trego 6-0 and 6-1, pulverized Phillipsburg 6-0 and 6-0 and destroyed Larned 6-0 and 6-2. She won against Hoisington 6-1 both times, and claimed first place in No. 1 singles.

No. 2 singles, sophomore Hannah Vague, trounced Trego 6-0 both times. She lost to Hoisington, 7-6, 7-4 and 6-4, sending her to the back side of the bracket. Once there, she beat Larned 7-6, 8-6 and 6-4. She won against Phillipsburg 7-5 and 6-3, and claimed fifth place.

Next, in the No. 1 doubles bracket, junior Inarie Rippert and sophomore Reygan Coonrod pilfered Central Plains, beating them 6-0 both times. They also destroyed Greeley County and Ellinwood 6-0 both times. They won against a different Central Plains team, 6-3 and 6-2, winning first.

In No. 2 doubles, senior Elena Jundt and junior Felis De La Cruz beat Larned 6-1 and 6-2 and Russell 6-1 both times. They lost against Central Plains 6-0 both times. They faced off against Ellinwood and won 6-2 both times.

Haase has a 30-1 season record. Vague’s is 27-4, Rippert and Coonrod are an undefeated 31-0 and Jundt and De La Cruz are 27-4.

The girls will compete at the 3-2-1A State Tournament Oct. 18-19 in Wichita.
