Track maintains performance through season
BELOIT — On a chilly Friday afternoon, the Ellsworth girls’ track team placed 10th at the Beloit Relays.
“We only took a handful of student athletes to the Beloit Relays on Friday,” head coach Nick Rodriguez said of the May 2 meet.
The rest of the team competed May 29 at the Hoisington Invitational.
The Beloit Relays were chilly, with temperatures never topping 60 degrees. “The team had some really good performances Friday,” he said. “Our biggest challenge will be managing all the other factors heading into our league and regional meets.
“Just staying healthy, managing the stresses of the end-of-the-year school work and being physically and mentally prepared for competitions.”
Rodriguez said points were awarded for top the top six finishes in each competition.

“At this meet it is unlimited entries, so we get to see kids back in action who may not have had an opportunity to compete recently,” Rodriguez said. “We also are able to place a few kids in events that they do not always have the opportunity to compete in in a regular track meet.”
With the Beloit Relays just three days later, the flexibility for entrants was a welcome one.
With some new athletes in the mix, the teams found a variety of success.
“The boys’ team had runners place in all the distance races,” Rodriguez said. “Sumner Homolka placed in both the discus and javelin, which are his best throwing events.”
As a team, the boys placed eighth.
On the girls’ side, the team placed fifth overall.
“Our throwers really continue to be impressive,” Rodriguez said.
“Leah Warta had a pretty good day in all her events. She had a big throw in the discus. Brooklyn Newell had a great effort in the shot put. All of these throwers really push each other in practice.”
